SAE Charles River Cleanup
Cambridge, MA

On April 26, 2008, the brothers of SAE Mass Gamma took on their greatest challenge as a fraternity yet. They cleaned the Charles River. That's right, thirty young men woke up at 9 AM on a Saturday to do community service. We approached one of the dirtiest rivers in the Northeastern United States as true gentlemen; not one of us even flinched. April 26th is Earth Day, and Mass Gamma like many other organizations in Massachusetts went out and cleaned the Charles. In fact, 105 community groups helped out at 57 different areas along the river. 20 tons of garbage were removed, and Mass Gamma certainly did its part, accumulating almost fifteen bags of garbage on our own.

Delta Gamma Anchor Splash Charity Swim Event at Boston University
Boston, MA

On Saturday, November 3, Brothers Patrick Mulvaney '10 and Steve Johnston '09 lead a group of five pledges to Boston University to participate in the fourth annual Anchor Splash philanthropy event. The event is run by the school's Delta Gamma sorority in order to benefit their national philanthropic organization, Service for Sight. Our chapter's $100 contribution for participating will benefit their work with those who are partially or entirely blind. Anchor Splash is an afternoon of water-related relays and competitions that take place in the FitRec indoor pool at BU. Our squad of pledges competed against other Greek organizations from BU and MIT. Every team was assigned two members of Delta Gamma who served as the team's coaches throughout the afternoon and who, along with Patrick and Steve, cheered on our team. This opportunity gave the pledges the chance to bond as a pledge class and appreciate the value of giving back to others through philanthropy.

Spring 2007

Union Square Clean Up With ADPi Sorority from Boston University
Somerville, MA

On Satuday, April 28th, we held the first joint philanthropy event with a sorority in recent memory. The brothers of Mass Gamma met 25 ADPis from BU in Harvard Square at 9:30 am for a quick breakfast of donuts and bagels before walking about one and a quarter miles to Union Square in Somerville where we joined the Union Square Main Streets community organization in their annual Clean Up Day event. Our team of volunteers divided into groups and picked up trash, raked, and planted flowers all over the neighborhood, including in some of its parks. After our volunteer work, the Union Square Main Streets organization hosted a barbeque for all the volunteers to unwind from the day's work. That night, we threw a celebratory "Risky Business" themed mixer with ADPi to cap off a day of philanthropy and fun that everyone thought was a great success. We hope to plan more of these joint philanthropy events with sororities in the coming year!

Boston All University Relay for Life 2007
Cambridge, MA

Mass Gamma once again participated in the American Cancer Society's Boston All University Relay for Life that was held at Harvard's Gordon Track on April 20-21. The event also constituted Mass Gamma's involvement in Sigma Alpha Epsilon's True Gentlemen Days of Service weekend, a national weekend of service throughout the realm. The chapter not only met it's goal of recruiting 30 brothers and pledges to participate on our two teams, we also exceeded our fundraising goal by raising $4305, shattering last year's total of just over $3600. Our total placed us as the second top fundraising Greek organization in all of Boston and the second top fundraising Harvard organization. Mass Gamma was also fifth overall among over 100 teams participating from all across Boston, an improvement from our eighth place finish last year. Congratulations to all of the brothers for their hard work in raising money for this good and noble cause!

Brothers Participate in Harvard DG Philanthropy Event
Cambridge, MA

On Saturday, April 14th, a team of brothers from Massachusetts Gamma attended the Harvard Delta Gamma Anchor Bowl, a trivia-style fundraiser for their charity organization Service for Sight. The team of True Gentlemen competed in the Quincy JCR for four rounds of trivia and nearly emerged victorious from the battle of knowledge, answering questions ranging from pop culture to current events to sports.

American Cancer Society Charity Event
Cambridge, MA

On April 7th, the brothers of Massachusetts Gamma hosted our Second Annual Paddy Murphy party. As was the case with our Second Annual Christmas in Dixie party, we anticipated a large turnout based on last year's event, so we hoped to capitalize on the large number of students in attendance by collecting voluntary donations at the door for our Relay for Life teams' efforts to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Once again, our charity event was a success! We raised $215 that we were able to donate to the American Cancer Society, and in the process, we helped to spread the word about the American Cancer Society and its Relay for Life event that was taking place two weeks later at Harvard. Well done, brothers!

Toys for Tots Charity Event
Cambridge, MA

On December 8th, the brothers of Massachusetts Gamma hosted our Second Annual Christmas in Dixie party. With the large turnout and positive response from last year's event, we felt that we should show some holiday cheer by structuring the event as a charity event. We collected toys and voluntary donations at the door for Toys for Tots. The event was a huge success! We raised $400 for the charity, as well as several bags full of toys. A $400 donation will be made to Toys for Tots in the name of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Massachusetts Gamma and donated along with all of the toys.

Spring 2006

Boston All University Relay for Life 2006
Cambridge, MA

During the True Gentleman Days of Service, Mass Gamma participated in the Boston All University Relay for Life event at Harvard's Gordon Track to benefit the American Cancer Society on April 21-22. Mass Gamma also solicited the participation of brothers in the Mass Beta Alpha Consortium Chapter. The event proved to be a valuable bonding experience between chapters that had not previously interacted much. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon team from Harvard far exceeded its original recruitment goal, with over 30 brothers and pledges participating. Together, we raised more than $3,600 for cancer research and awareness activities. Our hard work led to fundraising successes and the attainment of the 3rd highest donation total of all Harvard affiliated teams and the 8th highest of any team in the event, which drew well over 100 groups from all around the Boston area. The event also contributed to fraternal bonding, with brothers and pledges gathering for an entire night to support the cause while having a great deal of fun. Mass Gamma hopes to build on this year's participation and make Relay for Life an annual philanthropy event that will strengthen the chapter as we give back to the community and raising money for an extremely worthy cause. Phi alpha!

Volunteering at Veteran's Hospital
US Veteran's Hospital, MA

Several brothers participated in an additional community service project held the same weekend as Relay, teaming up with other SAE's from around the Boston area to remodel the grounds of and visited patients at a the Boston area Veteran's Hospital. This event exhibited the commitment of our chapter to the hospital, as the brothers of Massachusetts Gamma also helped out in Spring 2005.
